In the United States, there is an aversion to democratic socialism.  It is very often confused with communism.  This is because socialism: "To each according to her need and from each according to their ability" is confused with the politics of making this a reality.  Since the end of the second world war, in Europe, democratic socialism has been the norm.  I am currently working on a book describing why socialism and liberty are not opposed.
